Grocery Grant: General / Any Ages (Frontline)
Opens Sep 29 2025 12:01 AM (EST)
Deadline Oct 23 2025 11:59 PM (EST)
Up to $5000
Description

This is our Grocery Grant: General / Any Ages application form.

Mazon Canada, the Jewish Response to Hunger, is now receiving applications for small grants (up to $5000) for the purchase of food, or grocery gift cards, at food aid programs.

We aim to keep our application and reporting process simple and brief to respect your time. Most questions are multiple choice or short-answer – if you would like to explain your work at length, there is space for you to do so, but it is not required.

There is a separate Grocery Grant application for organizations that mainly (over 50%) serve children and youth (21 years old and younger). Please click here to access that form.

Each organization may only apply for a Grocery Grant once per year. You may not apply for multiple Grocery Grant across different streams (e.g., you may apply for EITHER the "Children & Youth" OR "General / Any Ages" stream, but not both). If your organization runs multiple programs, please choose one amongst your team and apply for the appropriate stream.

This year, eligibility has changed:

Mazon is a small, grassroots organization that fundraises each year for our granting budget. Due to overwhelming demand during this hunger crisis, we have been forced to tighten our criteria compared to previous years. To be eligible to apply, programs that serve mostly adults need to meet all 3 of the Screening Criteria, and at least 4 out of the 7 Eligibility Criteria. For questions that ask you to estimate percentages of clients, we don't expect that you track this information enough to be exact in your answers - estimates are fully acceptable!

Screening Criteria (your answer must be "Yes" to all of the following questions):

1) Is the program a 'frontline' food program (i.e., it provides food directly to clients/community members)?

2) Is more than 50% of the population served food-insecure?

3) Is less than 50% of the population served children and/or youth (21 or younger)?

Eligibility Criteria (your answer must be "Yes" to at least four of the following questions)

1) Is more than 80% of the population served food-insecure?

2) Is more than 30% of the population served unhoused?

3) Does the program operate primarily in a rural area, a remote area, or on reserve?

4) Does the program provide more than one meal (or equivalent) per week?

5) Is the organization's annual budget less than $750,000?

6) Is the organization's annual food budget less than $100,000?

7) Is the organization led by and for any of the following specific communities at higher risk of food insecurity ("by and for" in this case means 50%+ of leadership AND 50%+ of the population served)?: Racialized, Indigenous, Refugee/Newcomer, or LGBTQ+

Timeline

DEADLINE: Applications will close at midnight on October 23rd. Please fill out the Extension Request Form linked here if you'll need an extension for any reason (it's no big deal!). We can allow extensions up to 7 days after the deadline.

DECISIONS: Announcements go out by December, and funds will be distributed by mail immediately following announcements.

NEXT STEPS: If you are successful in receiving a Grocery Grant, you will be required to submit a short Supplemental Application by January 31st (extensions available) and another short Impact Report by April 30th (extensions available).

Grant Amounts

If successful, you may receive between $2,500 and $5,000. Last year, the average Grocery Grant was around $3,500.

Application FAQ

All application questions in .docx form (please use ONLY for preparation)

Application Form Information

You'll need to upload your most recent audited financial statements at the very end, so please keep them handy if you have them!

This form is intended to be as simple as possible; most questions are multiple-choice or short-answer, though you have the option of providing more information if you prefer. Most applicants spend 1-3 hours on this form last year (and we hope this year will be much faster); spending longer is unlikely to increase your chances of receiving funding.

Throughout the application, you may be asked for information about numbers of clients served, dollar amounts, percentages, or other quantities. For all of these questions, estimates are fully acceptable!

You will have the opportunity to save your work at any time with a 'save' button at the end of each page.

You are also welcome to fill out this application form via video submission - please record all of your answers to the questions as described in the Application Questions Preview document above, and email a link to the video to robbie@mazoncanada.ca

Partnership Feedback

At the bottom of this form, we ask for feedback on our application process! This is optional but we appreciate it so much - we've changed a lot about our process based on past grantee feedback. We'd especially like to know how long it took you to fill out the application (so please notice as you go). If you have any questions or would like to offer feedback in a conversation, please be in touch with our Community Lead, Robbie Solway, at robbie@mazoncanada.ca

We look forward to hearing about your program and the good you bring to your community!
